Record Labels Impacted by London Riots after Distribution Warehouse Burns Down

A three-story, 20,000 square-foot building that held the complete stock of PIAS UK [the primary distribution center for more than 160 independent record labels] in the London district of Enfield and owned by SonyDADC, was burned to the ground as violence in the capital continues.

A mass list of independent record labels including Victory Records, Nuclear Blast, Vagrant and Side One Dummy have lost a disastrous amount of stock in the recent fire started by rioters at a distribution warehouse in north London.

As reported by the Chicago Reader, Bettina Richards, owner of Thrill Jockey, “estimates wholesale losses of £189,000 [more than $300,000], with anywhere from ten to a hundred copies of each of the label's 280 back-catalog titles destroyed.”

Recent update from PIAS UK:

"Sony DADC have actioned their Business Continuity Plan and are back up and running from a new control room in Enfield. PIAS continue to work with them to minimise the impact on the business, a number one priority for all our labels and clients. SonyDADC have identified a temporary distribution partner and it is envisaged that they will be in a position to pick, pack and ship orders in the course of next week.

"This follows an earlier statement regarding a fire last night at the SonyDADC warehouse, which services the physical distribution for PIAS in the UK and Ireland. PIAS’s UK offices in London and all other areas of our business are unaffected."

Update:

An official statement from Basick Records as reported by MetalSucks is as follows.

"As far as I know Basick has some of its international stock housed there but at the moment we’re trying to find out what the extent of the damage is from the distributors. What we do know is that a MASSIVE amount of UK independent music labels are affected by this.

"The hope is that the distro have shipped most of the stock out of the country already but again, at the moment we’re still trying to find out exactly what the situation is. Sorry we have no more details at this time."

Update II:

The Association of Independent Music [AIM] released the following statement -

"You may have heard that the London riots have caused the destruction of a warehouse in North London housing many of the UK's independent labels and artists. All the stock has been destroyed by fire. 

"This will lead to much hardship for the artists and labels affected. What music fans can do to show their support for the indie label community, and help them survive this disaster is to buy a digital download of an album from any one of the digital retailers in the UK, as well as going to their local record store while stocks last. 

"This way, the labels will be able to remanufacture their CD's and vinyl more quickly, to resupply the record shops who are also affected by the riots."

Alison Wenham, Chairman and CEO of AIM, the UK's Trade Association for the Independent Music Industry:

"This is a disaster for the music community, but with the fans' help, labels and artists will survive. Please show your support for the music community by buying a digital album from an independent label today".
