SYNPERIUM - Elemental Disharmony

Elemental Disharmony marks Southern Highlands-based Synperium's debut album and follow-up to their 2007 EP release - which in itself, was quite well received. Since witnessing this band live, I have been keeping an eye out for their album's release, and it is far from disappointing for a debut.

Elemental Disharmony begins with a mighty belch of a growl (literally) and kicks straight into the heavy brutality Synperium is known for. Each song is interesting in its own way, with multiple changes in the song's pace - a feat which I do not disprove of. Though it can sometimes make the songs feel somewhat scattered, it also reinforces the fact that this is not background music. The title track ‘Elemental Disharmony’ is one example with odd changes in the drumming and tempo - at some points - but it makes for an entertaining listen as opposed to something with the same pace throughout the whole song.

‘Hype Machine’ is another example of the intriguing riffs and changes this album possesses. In the end, each song starts to feel like multiple songs pasted together, which makes this album different from the more straight-forward metal releases out there. Though for me, songs like this are less memorable, and so it does allow one to listen to it many times and not get overcome with boredom. Synperium is labeled as a tech-death metal outfit, and the technical side shines through quite brightly. 

For a debut release from a local band, this album has really clear production, and the musicianship is quite outstanding. Additionally, at times I found Synperium’s sound reminded me a little of Psycroptic, which I would say is a great accomplishment.

I thoroughly enjoyed this record and I would recommend to anyone after some heavy/fast extreme metal. Like most metal releases out there, this one sounds better the louder it is played!
