Kreator & Mortal Sin @ The Metro (Sydney)
It was a good vibe walking into the metro theatre tonight seeing a variety of metal heads ranging young to old. For 2 thrash metal bands in the underground metal community, it was quite amazing witnessing first hand the crowd in all its might. You could immediately tell it was going to be a night of blood, sweat and tears just by observing this maniacal crowd
Mortal Sin were the support band of the night. It was amazing to see such loyal support from these kids due to the fact that most of these kids weren’t even born when their debut album came out, It was quite astounding. Matt Maurer, the frontman of Mortal Sin, got the crowd amped with his excellent stage presence and crowd interaction. The crowd were very attentive in this case. The set featured brutal classics such as denied, mayhemic destruction and Lebanon plus a few new songs that the younger crowd would’ve been familiar with. Mick Sultana was showing his shredding throughout the set reminiscent of his earlier days playing in the 80s thrash band addictive.
The band seemed to work well with Matt Maurer as matt is the only original member left in Mortal Sin and it can usually be hard to work with an unfamiliar band at times but they all worked well and pulled out an amazing thrash set. The older crowd didn’t seem to get much into it, but still the sound was great and overall Mortal Sin played an exceptional set
Kreator the main act of the evening were up next and the crowd were extremely impatient and ecstatic to wait and see the band. As soon as the lights went down and the curtains opened, a massive roar opened from the crowd. The back screen turned on with some video footage of Kreators live performances. As soon as Kreator came out on stage, a massive roar opened up from the crowd. They bursted into their self titled track from their latest album “hordes of chaos” which sounds very similar to the metallica song “blackened” with a bit more anger to it. They continued blasting through their set with classic tracks such as betrayer, extreme aggression, pleasure to kill & flag of hate. Quite a humorous moment and highlight of the gig was in the song “flag of hate” when miland came out waving a massive flag encouraging the crowd to scream “fucking hate!”. The flag ended up coming off the pole during the time he was waving it around and joked about the flag not being so hateful now. The crowd had a bit of a chuckle and it lightened up any intense mood from the crowd.
Jurgen, the drummer, pulled out a 7 minute drum solo showing the amazing techniques and skills he can conquer. It was more precision than speed in the solo which showed the amazing skill and talent this man has. Only coming out for one encore the crowd were pleased with such a brutal set. The detah circle was fuelled and the headbangers around were thrashing their heads to the old school thrash stylings of one of Germanys most profound and lasting metal bands.
Whether you were young or old you would’ve been impressed to see such a great set and a metal band at their prime. No matter the age, kreator still perform as well or if not better than they were 20 years ago. Thrash lives on!
