Wacken 2009 - Day #1
The festival itself was an amazing experience and I couldn't have been more happy to be part of such an amazing event. I witnessed some amazing live bands, met some great people, interviewed bands and all round had an amazing time.
This was my first day of actually experiencing the festival as a whole and to my astonishment, it was much more than what was expected. Other than 100,100 metal-heads drinking and the countless amounts of battle-jackets that were present, I witnessed such an amazing atmosphere as soon as I arrived. The first band that was witnessed for the day was a danish band called D&D. The band had have a very catchy rock sound, very similar to Def Leopard. They played with a lot of heart and got the crowd singing the words to most of their songs, very crowd enthusiastic band and it was definitely an experience to see. I ended up buying a few of their albums when I got back to Sydney.
The second band I checked out was one of the secret bands playing that night. It ended up being a folk/party/metal band called Unkle Tom. He seemed to be one of the highlights of the festival. There was something about his connection with the crowd and his stage presence which guided the crowd right into his arms. Even though all the words were in german, you felt the energy driven from the crowd.
After a few interviews and meeting new people throughout the day, not to mention getting lost a heap of times, I ended up seeing Ronnie James Dio and the boys from Heaven & Hell. This for myself was an amazing experience. I have grown up on black sabbath and also rainbow so just to see these men up on stage was an incredible moment for me.
Highlights of songs were children of the sea, heaven and hell, neon knight. They also played new music from the new album "the devil you know" which sounded just as tight as they do on cd. The first single bible black got the crowd roaring in a frenzy
More to come ...
